Abstract
In a Request for an Opinion, Grant et al. (1998) proposed strain NCIMB 13488 as the neotype of Halorubrum trapanicum, arguing that strain NRC 34021, derived from Petter's original isolate of Halorubrum trapanicum, is no longer available. They state, however, that the proposed neotype is also derived from Petter's original isolate (Petter, 1931, 1932).
The Judicial Commission decided that Halorubrum trapanicum strain NCIMB 13488 will not be the neotype, but since it is derived from strain NRC 34021, which in turn is derived from Petter's original isolate, it is a strain on which the original description was based [Rule 18c of the Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision); Lapage et al., 1992], and may therefore also serve as the type strain of the species.
