This document is an official notification list from the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM) announcing new bacterial and archaeal names and taxonomic combinations published in volume 54, part 3 of 2004. The list serves as a registry to assist the bacteriology community in recognizing validly published taxonomic names according to the Rules of priority established by the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes. The notification includes approximately 70 new bacterial species and genera across diverse taxa, including Petrobacter, Reinekea, Kordia, Burkholderia, Legionella, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Streptomyces, and many others. Additionally, the list documents several new combinations and taxonomic emendations, such as the reclassification of Cellulosimicrobium variabile as Isoptericola variabilis and the consolidation of Lactobacillus cellobiosus as a synonym of L. fermentum. A special notation explains an exception for Legionella drancourtii, which lacks type strain deposition in multiple standard culture collections due to its obligate intracellular cultivation requirements in amoebae, yet is still considered validly published.

Key findings

  • Approximately 70 new bacterial and archaeal species and genera were validly published in IJSEM volume 54, part 3 in 2004
  • Multiple new taxonomic combinations and emendations were established, including the reclassification of previously named organisms
  • An exception to standard bacteriological code rules was made for Legionella drancourtii due to cultivation constraints with obligate intracellular symbionts
  • The notification list provides a centralized registry following Rules of priority for recognizing new prokaryotic names
  • Diverse bacterial taxa were represented, spanning environments from marine sediments to industrial settings and animal hosts

Abstract

This listing of names published in a previous issue of the IJSEM is provided as a service to bacteriology to assist in the recognition of new names and new combinations. This procedure was proposed by the Judicial Commission [Minute 11(ii), Int J Syst Bacteriol 41 (1991), p. 185]. The names given herein are listed according to the Rules of priority (i.e. page number and order of valid publication of names in the original articles). Taxonomic opinions included in this List (i.e. the creation of synonyms or the emendation of circumscriptions) cannot be considered as validly published nor, in any other way, approved by the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes and its Judicial Commission.
