Summary auto-generated
This article is a formal notification of new bacterial and archaeal names and new taxonomic combinations published in volume 55, part 1 of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM). The document lists approximately 100 newly validated species names and several new genera, organized according to priority rules based on publication page numbers. The list includes diverse bacterial taxa spanning multiple phyla, such as Lactobacillus species, Bacillus species, marine bacteria, and various other prokaryotes. Additionally, the notification documents important taxonomic reorganizations, notably the consolidation of multiple Salmonella species into subspecies of Salmonella enterica, and corrections to previously published names, particularly for sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in the genera Thioalkalicoccus, Thioalkalimicrobium, and Thioalkalivibrio, where the original chemical nomenclature conventions were restored. This service announcement assists the microbiology community in recognizing validly published names while clarifying that taxonomic opinions presented do not constitute formal approval by the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes.
Key findings
- Approximately 100 new bacterial and archaeal species names were validly published in IJSEM volume 55, part 1, spanning diverse taxa including Lactobacillus, Bacillus, marine bacteria, and archaea
- Multiple Salmonella species including S. typhi, S. typhimurium, and S. paratyphi were reclassified as subspecies of Salmonella enterica through valid publication
- Nomenclature corrections were made to sulfur-oxidizing bacteria genera (Thioalkalicoccus, Thioalkalimicrobium, Thioalkalivibrio) to restore original chemical-based spelling conventions
- Two genera (Pelczaria) were rejected under the Bacteriological Code
- The notification follows Rules of priority for valid name publication and serves as a reference tool for microbiology research and classification

Abstract
This listing of names published in a previous issue of the IJSEM is provided as a service to bacteriology to assist in the recognition of new names and new combinations. This procedure was proposed by the Judicial Commission [Minute 11(ii), Int J Syst Bacteriol 41 (1991), p. 185]. The names given herein are listed according to the Rules of priority (i.e. page number and order of valid publication of names in the original articles). Taxonomic opinions included in this List (i.e. the creation of synonyms or the emendation of circumscriptions) cannot be considered as validly published nor, in any other way, approved by the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes and its Judicial Commission.
