Minute 3. Report on the activities of the subcommittee.
The minutes of the subcommittee meeting of 2002 (Paris) have been published in Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 53 (2003) 925. The present status of the taxonomy of the genus Streptomyces was discussed in the light of the forthcoming presentation in Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, 2nd edition. There was agreement that 16S rRNA gene sequence data should be used as a framework for presentation of species and species groups; however, it was also agreed that the boundary for species delineation in this genus seems to be higher than 97 % (99 % and up to 99·5 % were discussed). There was also general agreement that 16S rRNA gene sequence data cannot serve as the sole basis for species delineation within the genus Streptomyces and the problems of insufficient resolution capacity using this molecule were addressed. A presentation of Streptomyces species in Bergey's Manual should be based on those species with validly published names and should include clear statements of strengths and weaknesses of the methods used. Furthermore, a careful look at synonymy should be pursued further.
