Phosphate-polymer-dependent Phosphorylation of Glycolytic Substrates by Brevibacterium Species

Abstract

Summary: Phosphate polymer-utilizing activity for the phosphorylation of glucose, mannose, fructose and fructose 6-phosphate was investigated in 12 Brevibacterium species. Almost all the species were able to phosphorylate sugars using metaphosphate as a phosphoryl donor. However, only B. pusillum was able to phosphorylate fructose 6-phosphate to fructose 1,6-bisphosphate using pyrophosphate. The analysis of cell extracts prepared from B. pusillum indicated that at least two enzymes were responsible for the phosphate-polymer-dependent phosphorylation of sugars and fructose 6-phosphate.
