Abstract

At its meetings in July 2005, at the IUMS Congress in San Francisco, the Judicial Commission of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes ruled that, on the transfer of Bacteroides forsythus Tanner et al. 1986 to the genus Tannerella Sakamoto et al. 2002, the adjectival form of the specific epithet is to be conserved. The Request for an Opinion of Maiden et al. (2003) has provided ample background to explain the basis on which the original name was formed (Tanner et al., 1986). The altered form proposed on transfer to the genus Tannerella Sakamoto et al. 2002 was based on a misunderstanding of the intent of the original authors. The authorship of the species name Tannerella forsythia corrig. is to be attributed to Sakamoto et al. (2002).
